Though not in the tornado belt that has recently been ravaged by this season’s severe weather emergencies, Los Angeles is no stranger to public safety scares. From earthquake threats to raging wild fires, the county is well aware of the damage that Mother Nature can do. As we approach 10 years after 9/11, we are reminded that natural disasters are not the only time we should consider our public safety. Now is the time to take a close look at what progress we have really made, and start to think discuss how we should respond and communicate in the event of all disaster scenarios.

    Living nine blocks from the U.S. Capitol and across from a Marine Corps base, I take it for granted that I would find out quickly about any local emergency. I just assume I would hear aircraft overhead and sirens outside my windows. But last week, while I was talking to Joe Wilson, vice president and general manager for Federal Signal’s Safety and Security Group, I realized that I don’t know the emergency notification system for my neighborhood. I also join more than half of my fellow Americans who still do not have an emergency plan.
  • Natural Disasters and Terrorist Threats Top Americans' Public Safety Concerns

    Three in five Americans are most concerned about emergencies involving a natural disaster or terrorist attack, with a health pandemic closely following as a top concern among 46 percent of respondents, according to Federals Signal's 2010 Public Safety survey released today. The survey was done in partnership with Safe America Foundation and Zogby International as part of an effort to uncover Americans' chief concerns and most likely behaviors in emergencies. Federal Signal, a maker of public communications equipment and systems, will announce the survey results today at Safe America Foundation's (SAF) '9/11 Drill Down for Safety' briefing at USA Today headquarters. The meeting of public safety leaders and government officials provides a national stage to review the results and progress from this year's 9/11 disaster preparedness program that mobilized more than a half-million people across 34 states.

    Federal Signal and announced the deployment of the Hamilton County, OH emergency notification system today. The Emergency Alert Notification System allows local officials to telephone, email, text, or page; geographically targeted notifications to businesses and residents within Hamilton County in the event of an emergency situation that requires immediate action.
